How it works for auto dealers

Buyers who want to buy a car with crypto look for dealers that accept it. We set up your dealership so you receive US dollars on each sale. Your rates and fees are set by the processor, and we will walk you through every step, from the application to your first live sale and staff training.

BitPay's retail page names automotive among the merchant types it serves (BitPay). It locks the exchange rate on each invoice, settles US dollars to your bank the next business day, and BitPay says crypto payments through it eliminate chargebacks.

Volume limits are the big planning item for dealers. New BitPay accounts start at Tier 2: $10,000 per day and $500,000 per year. A single vehicle can go over that, so we help you apply for Tier 3 ($100,000 per day, $5 million per year) before your first crypto deal. Tier 3 needs three months of business bank statements or a bank letter (BitPay compliance). Buyers paying over $3,000 complete a one-time BitPay ID check, so your desk should tell customers early.

Our setup can include a second customer-facing screen for the F&I or closing office and a written procedure for deposits, ID checks and refunds. On reporting: IRS Announcement 2024-4 says businesses don't have to count digital assets toward the $10,000 Form 8300 threshold until regulations are issued, while cash rules still apply. Which processor you'll use

We route by your average ticket: under $5,000 goes to Flexa (1% flat, iPhone/iPad app) and $5,000 and up goes to BitPay (2% + $0.25, next-business-day USD settlement).

Flexa: everyday tickets

  • 1% flat fee, with no setup or conversion fees (Flexa)
  • Flexa Point of Sale app on any iPhone or iPad (Flexa docs)
  • For small and mid-size tickets, under $5,000

BitPay: big tickets

  • 2% + $0.25 per transaction under $500K/month (BitPay pricing)
  • US dollars to your bank the next business day, locked exchange rates, and no chargebacks as a BitPay feature (BitPay)
  • For tickets of $5,000 and up

Processor fees are set by BitPay and Flexa and can change. Crypto fees are not always lower than card fees, so we compare against your own statement rate. Processors approve or decline merchants, not us.

FAQ

Can a customer buy a whole car with crypto?

Yes, if your BitPay tier allows it. New accounts are limited to $10,000 per day, so apply for Tier 3 ($100,000 per day) before your first full vehicle sale.

Do crypto payments count toward Form 8300?

Under IRS Announcement 2024-4, digital assets don't count toward the $10,000 threshold until regulations are issued. Check with your CPA.

Can customers buy a car with crypto?

Yes, at dealers that accept it. Dealers use BitPay, and should apply for Tier 3 ($100,000 per day) before full vehicle sales.

Do I have to hold crypto?

No. Payments settle in US dollars, and we never touch your funds.

Will this save me money versus cards?

Not necessarily. Crypto processor fees can be similar to card rates. We compare against your own statement and don't promise savings.
